3608 EFKON is playing an important role in the construction of the €660 million Limerick Tunnel project in Ireland.

The project forms part of the country’s Transport 21 Plan, a huge road construction programme while the tunnel is the largest civil engineering work for the Dublin area since 1920.

Efkon’s portion of the project is worth €40 million, and has included installing sophisticated intelligent transport management technology to control traffic flow and provide safety systems.

Once commissioned in September this year, the Limerick Tunnel will help reduce congestion from the centre of the city by up to 40,000 vehicles/day.

The tunnel runs under the River Shannon and the project has also included building 10km of new road and work started in August 2006.

The work to upgrade the Desert Highway connecting Egypt's sprawling capital Cairo with its major port Alexandria, is one of the country's largest infrastructure projects for many years. This 220km highway link is being widened and improved to cope with the hugely increased traffic volumes resulting partly from Egypt's fast growing vehicle population. The Egyptian economy is strong

A variety of systems are available for quickly and efficiently removing water from roads as Patrick Smith reports The presence of water in a highway layer reduces the bearing capacity of the road, and in doing so it also reduces the structure's lifetime. Indeed, the recent extremely cold winter in many parts of Europe has shown that in colder climates there is a risk of frost damage when water is present resulting in costly potholes, so drainage systems performing properly are important in road design.
