Business is picking up for Vacuworx: the HL Series hydraulic barrier lifters
Highway construction projects can be particularly challenging when space is limited, roads are crowded and time is short. To meet these challenges, the US company Vacuworx has developed the HL Series Hydraulic Barrier Lifters.

Vacuworx describes the lifters as “a smarter way to handle concrete barriers”. The traditional method of moving concrete road barriers with slings and chains is slow and lacks control, not to mention increasing the dangers of accidents for employees.

Designed for use with a variety of equipment, including excavators and backhoes, the HL Series lifters connect easily and work with the host’s hydraulic system. Elastomer grips provide superior performance with full surface contact without damaging materials.

It is equipped with a hydraulic lock for safety to prevent loss of load if hydraulic pressure is lost. With 360° rotation, the HL Series is perfect for manoeuvring in confined spaces during road, bridge and highway applications.

Precision handling capabilities and wireless remote operation from the cab of the host machine makes loading, unloading and installation fast and easy and without the need to have someone continually guide the barrier on the ground.

From an environmental perspective, Vacuworx hydraulic lifting systems produce near zero noise and air pollution, ideal for construction sites within city limits or with strict emission guidelines.

The HL B1 is designed to lift concrete road barriers up to 2,720kg and nearly 3.7m long while the HL B2 can handle barriers up to 35,275kg and nearly 9.2m long.

Quick-couplers are available for virtually all host machines for the ultimate in attachment versatility and even greater productivity on the job.

The HL Series Hydraulic Barrier Lifters also meet or exceed all global safety and engineering standards, including OSHA, ISO, ASME and CE.

Vacuworx lifters can be attached to hydraulic excavators and backhoes - with or without a coupler system - wheel or track type loaders, cranes, pipe layers, skid steers, forklifts and knuckle booms and can also be mounted for a variety of in-plant applications.

Concrete highway construction techniques and technology continues to evolve. Mike Woof reports The recent increases in oil costs are having a knock-on effect for the road construction sector, as asphalt prices have increased noticeably and faster than those for concrete. This has spurred renewed discussion over which construction technique now offers the best long term solution for road building. The debate between those in favour of concrete and those preferring asphalt for highway construction has been on

Traditional pavement drying typically involves the use of jet engine dryers, infrared heat and portable blowers, combined with brooms and manual squeegees. Each method has its limitations along with safety concerns. These include the use of jet fuel, noise, melting pavement, danger from thrown rocks or other objects – not mention slow results. Because of this, traffic is often fully restricted from traveling on roads or runways where drying work is taking place.

E-Z Drill is now introducing its Model 210 Equipment-Mounted concrete drill attachment series. Consisting of three models: the three-gang Model 210-3 EQ MT, four-gang Model 210-4 EQ MT and five-gang Model 210-5 EQ MT, the range is said to be compatible with most backhoe loaders and excavators. The pneumatic drills are said to deliver high productivity and lower maintenance needs, suiting them to full-depth road repair and patching projects. A control panel is mounted on the drill and the units are capable
