The project has proved to be less than straightforward, with piles being drilled in a difficult and overburden soil that stretches over pre-existing foundations. Silty clay, sand and several rock layers are the main geological components. The segmental casing technology, where piles are driven directly by the rotary head, have also been utilised.

The foundation piles have been driven using the Soilmec SR-125 HIT to depths ranging from 36-40m, and with diameters of 1.5m and 2m.

The SR-125 HIT is a multi-purpose drilling rig designed to be efficient and powerful, offering performance and versatility. Its new mast and new rotary system are said to an optimum weight-to-performance ratio. The operator’s cab was designed to offer maximum comfort and ease of use to increase productivity.

To ensure safety, the machines benefit from video cameras so the operator has a full 360° view of the area around the rig, 10 lux lighting for night operation, as well as a low emission diesel rated at 470kW that meets the Tier 4 Final requirements.

In addition, the Soilmec engineers developed technical solutions to ensure that this model has a low operating noise. To reduce working noise, the machine has radiators equipped with fan speed controls as well as sound-absorbing and heat-resistant materials fitted in the engine area. Also reducing noise is the specially designed air flow and use of plastic components that provide additional muffling.

Bitumen is changing,” says Massimo Menestrina, CEO of Menestrina, which manufactures specialist bitumen processing plants. Menestrina is at the forefront of these changes. Its air-blowing and polymer modification technologies are being used to improve the performance of poor-quality bitumen, and it has invented a new process which promises to transform recycled tyre rubber into a binder which can be used instead of bitumen.
