Work is being carried out on two important highway upgrade projects in Texas at present.

The reduction in vehicle traffic due to the COVID 19 pandemic has helped progress with work on the US$200 million improvement works to the Sam Rayburn Tollway. The route is being widened along a 42km stretch and the work should be complete by the end of 2021 if it continues on track.

The Sam Rayburn Tollway was previously known as State Highway 121 or 121 Tollway and extends northeasterly from Business 121 near the Dallas/Denton county line to US 75 in Collin County. Work to widen the route commenced in January 2019 and the road will feature four lanes in either direction along the 42km section once the work is complete.

Meanwhile, a 10km section of Texas State Highway 249 is now opening to traffic. The new road section forms part of the $799 million project to extend Highway 249 by 41km. The work will provide a new road link for the north west of Houston. The section between Pinehurst and Magnolia is opening and tolling will commence shortly afterwards. When complete, the Highway 249 extension will connect with Navasota.

Because of the proximity to two major cities, the highways carry heavy traffic volumes and US 281 in particular was in need of repair.
