Work planned for two major Indian highway projects

Two large highway projects in India are now moving forward following the award of contracts by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The NHAI awarded a contract worth US$269.62 million to Hindustan Construction Co (HCC) for the construction of a highway in the local state of Jammu and Kashmir. The project is part of the second stage of the National Highways Development Project (NHDP) initiative by the NHAI for the NH 1A highway, and covers 36km including 3km of tunnels between Banihal and Ramban.

Two large highway projects in India are now moving forward following the award of contracts by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The NHAI awarded a contract worth US$269.62 million to Hindustan Construction Co (HCC) for the construction of a highway in the local state of Jammu and Kashmir. The project is part of the second stage of the National Highways Development Project (NHDP) initiative by the NHAI for the NH 1A highway, and covers 36km including 3km of tunnels between Banihal and Ramban.

Meanwhile the NHAI awarded a deal worth $258.22 million to Gammon India to widen National Highways 1A in Jammu & Kashmir. The Udhampur to Ramban section of NH 1A will be widened to Km 151 from Km 67 to 130. The contract was awarded under phase II of the NHDP.

The project has been awarded to local road development firm IRB Infrastructure Developers (IRB). The 14.08km tunnel is expected to take seven years to complete. The concession for the project is for 22 years. As part of the deal, IRB will oversee the construction of 10.8km of approach roads on Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri Road in Jammu and Kashmir.
