Turkey's new highway

Work on Turkey's Istanbul-Izmir highway is now in planning. The US$1 billion project will include a radical suspended bridge, said to be one of the longest of its type.

Work on Turkey's Istanbul-Izmir highway is now in planning. The US$1 billion project will include a radical suspended bridge, said to be one of the longest of its type. A group of banks, 1469 Banca Infrastrutture Innovazione e Sviluppo (BIIS), the infrastructure investment unit of the 1473 Intesa Sanpaolo group, 1474 Citibank and Turkish bank 1476 Akbank are supporting the project. In Turkey BIIS has already funded the Gumusova-Gerede highway, which is worth $239.5 million.

The bridge will span the Dardanelles Straits and the funding package is worth US$2.83 billion. The financing will come in the shape of a loan has been secured by a group of 24 banks and institutions from 10 countries in all. The loan calls for a 15 year repayment period. The bridge will be a constructed by a consortium, Canakkale Otoyol.

    The consortium building Australia's new Northern Link tollway expects the project to require four years to complete. The US$1.41 billion (A$1.5 billion) project is being carried out by a consortium led by Spanish contrator Acciona, with construction due to commence at the end of this year. The work is being part funded by a $745 million loan from the State Government for the area and will also receive $532 million of funding from the Federal Government.
