Trans-Asia highway connection

Recent discussions held in Indonesia’s North Kalimantan province with local officials and counterparts from Brunei, Malaysia and the Philippines have focussed on improving transport connections. Recent discussions held in Indonesia’s North Kalimantan province with local officials and counterparts from Brunei, Malaysia and the Philippines have focussed on improving transport connections. The four nations have been agreeing a strategy to develop connectivity for the East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) that they comprise. A target budget of some US$21.4 billion has been set for developing transport infrastructure, including roads and bridges, ports, airports and rail links. The four nations have agreed to establish two primary transport and communications corridors - the Greater Sulu, Sulawesi Economic Corridor and the West Borneo Economic Corridor. Indonesia’s priority projects for this programme of works include the Samarinda-Balikpapan toll road and Manado-Bitung toll road.

In Anhui Province plans have been drawn up for road and highway improvements as well as upgrades to other categories of transport infrastructure over the period from 2017 to 2021.   • South East Asia highway to connect Myanmar, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos

    Plans are in hand in South East Asia for an improved road link connecting Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar and Laos. A loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) worth US$100 million will help fund the work for the 66.4km section running between Kawkareik and Eindu in Myanmar. The highway will run for some 1,450km in all. The road will be called the East-West Economic Corridor and is of key importance to open up trade and transport between these nations.   • Indonesia’s important tolled highway underway

    Work is said to be progressing on track in Indonesia with the Trans-Sumatra tolled highway. Construction of the section linking Aceh and Lampung Provinces looks set to be completed by the end of 2014 and is expected to open for traffic in early 2015. So far the work looks to cost in the region of US$625 million, with work being carried out by Hutama Karya. Meanwhile plans are also in hand for a new toll road for heavy trucks only that will connect West Java's Citibung and North Jakarta's Tanjung Priok Port.
