Tajikistan is planning a major programme of repairs to its roads and bridges. The aim of the work is to improve connectivity. A total budget of US$335.4 million has been set for the work. Of this budget, $195.65 million will be used to rebuild roads.

The country’s mountainous regions suffer from poor access due to limited transport infrastructure at present. The aim of the programme will be to construct up to 60 new bridges to improve accessibility, which will help boost economic development in these remote rural regions. Suspension bridges are likely to be used in many instances due to the suitability of this type of structure for the challenging, mountainous topography.

  • Tamil Nadu in India upgrading rural roads

    India’s Tamil Nadu State is working on a programme to redevelop 1,538km of rural roads. The plan has been set out by the Tamil Nadu State Government. Financing for the work will be provided by the National Bank for Agriculture & Rural Development (NABARD). The work is being planned by Rural Roads unit of the state’s Highways Department. A budget of US$112.5 million has been set for the upgrade work, which should be completed within six months.
