The Øye–Eidsbru section is located about midway between Oslo and Bergen. The work comprises the new construction of 4.5km of main road and 2.1km of side roads. It includes a 1.97km long tunnel that will be built using conventional drilling and blasting methods. This section of the E16 lies in a mountainous area known as Filefjell, which has a peak elevation of 1,920m. The road will pass its highest point at 1,013m above sea level. Temperatures in the area can reach -25°C in the winter and massive snowfall is a common occurrence. The climate and location will present challenges to STRABAG although the firm says it is confident that it can carry out the work successfully.
