Over US$100 million is being budgeted for a new interchange in the Russian city of St Petersburg. The project involves an upgrade to the Pirogovskaya Embankment at the interchange ramp for the Sampsonievsky bridge. The project is expected to be complete by June 2012. The work involves upgrading the roadway for the Pirogovskaya Embankment, rebuilding some existing structures and driving a new tunnel under the ramp for the Sampsonievsky Bridge. The upgrade will double capacity for the Pirogovskaya Embankment to 8,730 vehicles/hour. After work is complete on the interchange, the city is planning to begin construction of Kronverksky Corridor and a tunnel under Kamennoostrovsky Prospect.

A new alignment is being considered for a major project in Russia’s second city, St Petersburg. A tunnel stretch running under the Neva River is being considered as an alternative route for the Eastern High Speed Diameter (EHSD) project. This tunnel would take the place of the fixed bridge, which has been criticised by some for its impact on the city’s skyline. However building the tunnel would increase the cost of the project by around US$52 million.
