Slovakia highway section open to drivers

An important highway section in Slovakia is now open to drivers

A new 11km section of the D1 highway in Slovakia is now open to drivers. The stretch bypasses Zilina and connects Hricovske Podhradie with Lietavska Lucka. This section of the D1 includes the Zilina tunnel and the 2.5km Ovciarsko tunnel. The work cost €445.17 million and construction was carried out by a contracting consortium comprising Doprastav Metrostav, Strabag and Vahostav.

Construction of the tunnel sections posed challenges for the builders. 

The D1 forms part of the trans-European Network (TEN) and is Corridor 5, connecting Ukraine with the Venice, on the Mediterranean. The Slovakian section of the route connects Ukraine with Vienna and runs through Bratislava.

    Poland’s General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) reports that that the three bids for the Czestochowa A1 motorway section exceed the agency’s budget. The least expensive bid was nearly €101 million, submitted by a consortium of Strabag Infrastruktura Poludnie, Budimex and Budpol. Lemar bid around €121 million while Intercor bid €159 million.   • Astaldi begins drilling tunnels on Poland’s S7 dual carriageway

    Italian contractor Astaldi has begun drilling two parallel tunnels as part of its S7 dual carriageway project in Poland. Each tunnel, between Naprawa and Skomielna Biala and under the Lubon Maly massif, will each be just over 2km long.   • Czech highway deal for consortium partners

    A consortium has won a package of works to construct a section of the D35 highway in the Czech Republic. The 12.6km stretch of the D35 highway lies between Opatovice and Časy and the project has a contract value of €132 million, with the work expected to take 44 months to complete.
