Upgrade work is being planned in The Netherlands for Rotterdam’s Van Brienenoordbrug bridge. The work is expected to cost from €380-600 million to carry out. The work is intended to commence in 2025 and should be complete by 2027.

The tied-arch bridge features inclined hangers and was opened to traffic in 1965. A new temporary bridge will be constructed alongside the existing structure to carry traffic while the work is carried out.

The 1.32km bridge carries six lanes of traffic in either direction, handling around 250,000 vehicles/day. The bridge forms part of the A16 highway, the busiest route in The Netherlands.

The improvements are needed to help upgrade and reinforce the structure of the bridge due to the enormous traffic load it has to cope with.
