Romania-Bulgaria bridge

Work is progressing on track with the new Danube Bridge 2, which will connect Bulgaria and Romania.

Work is progressing on track with the new Danube Bridge 2, which will connect Bulgaria and Romania. Around 60% of the work has now been completed, along with some 50% of the connecting roads and other necessary infrastructure improvements. The new bridge will run from Vidin in Bulgaria to Calafat in Romania and it is due for completion by the end of 2011. The bridge will provide a combined road and rail link and the connections to the Romanian and Bulgarian networks will be finished after the bridge itself has been completed.

    In Serbia plans are moving ahead with work on the Zezeljev Bridge. The structure will provide a new crossing over the Danube River for the city of Novi Sad. The new bridge replaces an old structure carrying both rail and road links that was destroyed by bombing in 1999. Construction of the new bridge forms part of an EU strategy for the Danube Region.     The National Road Infrastructure Agency (NRIA) in Bulgaria is to benefit from funding worth €255.7 million, which is being provided by the EU's operational programme for regional development. The money will be used for upgrades to 660km of second and third category roads. In addition, work on Bulgaria's Lyulin motorway is running to schedule and should be completed in 2012 as planned.
