Construction of a €500 million road will ensure speedy transport connections to the new airport being built for Portugal’s capital, Lisbon. The Portuguese road firm, Brisa, has the 18-year concession for the link.

The Alcochete Airport project has suffered a number of delays but should now be ready for use in 2034. It will offer considerably more capacity than the existing airport to meet projected demand. Located around 30km from Lisbon, new rail and road connections will ensure fast transport between the airport and the city. The new airport can be accessed from Lisbon by the Vasco de Gama Bridge that crosses the River Tagus. When the new €9 billion airport comes into service, the existing airport will be closed down and the site will be repurposed.

Lisbon's current airport has a capacity of just 30 million passengers/year, but the new facility will be able to handle up to 100 million passengers/year, featuring two main runways. The new airport is being built on the site of the Montijo Airbase previously used by the military.
