Planned maintenance works will improve Mozambique roads

A programme of road maintenance and general upgrades will improve road links in Mozambique’s Tete Province. The scheme will see work worth around US$187 million carried out on some 700km of roads by Estradas do Zambeze. The company has a 30 year concession deal for the roads in Tete Province.

A programme of road maintenance and general upgrades will improve road links in Mozambique’s Tete Province. The scheme will see work worth around US$187 million carried out on some 700km of roads by 7417 Estradas do Zambeze. The company has a 30 year concession deal for the roads in Tete Province.

Key works planned during 2013 include improvements to the 258km road connecting Cuchamano with Zóbuè, a new bridge and the rebuilding of Tete's main road. Estradas do Zambeze is jointly owned by Portuguese contractors Opway-Engenharia, Sociedade de Construções Soares da Costa and Mota-Engil.

    An ambitious road improvement scheme has been proposed by the Mozambique Government. The programme of works calls for the paving of 2,100km of roads by 2019. The scheme will address both national and regional roads across the country between 2015 and 2019, covering around 420km/year of roads on average.     Mozambique’s Maputo-Catembe Bridge is due to open shortly and will become Africa’s longest suspension bridge. The 3km bridge will form part of the road connection between Maputo, Mozambique’s capital, and Catembe. The bridge is costing over US$700 million, with much of the necessary funding being provided by the Export Import Bank of China. The new bridge will improve transport and reduce journey times for drivers, who currently have to rely on ferries travelling between Maputo and Catembe.
