Construction work continues for Paraguay’s Ruta Bioceanica road project. The first stretch of the project, which will link Carmelo Peralta (Alto Paraguay) and Loma Plata (Boquerón), is being built by the Corredor Vial Botanico consortium comprising contractors Queiroz Galvao and Ochoa. This 277km stretch is costing around US$435 million to build and the work is being carried out under the PPP model.

There have been recent protests by locals living near to the project over health concerns arising from having site personnel in the area due to the current pandemic. Locals blocked road access to the camp where the site personnel were located.

However, the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) issued a statement addressed to residents in the area, ensuring that the consortium managers are taking all necessary preventive sanitary measures for the health of the workers.
