The contract to design the new bridge connecting Paraguay with Brazil has now been awarded. The design work will be carried out by the consortium,  Consorcio Prointec. The contract is worth US$4.7 million and the consortium carrying out the work comprises the firms Intec, Prosul and Innovacion y Excelencia.

The bridge will link Carmelo Peralta in Paraguay with Puerto Murtinho in Brazil and the project to build the structure is expected to cost from $75-85 million in all. The necessary funding for the bridge is coming from Itaipu.

Along with the bridge project, several new road links will have to be constructed and a number of existing routes will have to be improved. Once it opens to traffic, the bridge will connect with Brazil’s route 267. But the roads on the Paraguayan side will have to be improved and widened as the existing links will not meet demand. Only minor roads currently connect Carmelo Peralta to the rest of Paraguay.
