North-South Korea connection agreement

New cross-border road connections are being planned between South Korea and North Korea. The two governments have set up a joint study group to discuss new road links across the border as well as upgrades and improvements to key roads in North Korea. One road link being prioritised for improvement works is the Musan to Kaesong route. Upgrading this route would boost transport between South Korea and China, as well as between South Korea’s capital Seoul and the North Korean capital, Pyongyang.

New cross-border road connections are being planned between South Korea and North Korea. The two governments have set up a joint study group to discuss new road links across the border as well as upgrades and improvements to key roads in North Korea.

Eight sections of the route are being opened for bidding, with these being planned under the build-operate-transfer model. Financing for these eight stretches will be provided by a combination of bank loans, private investors and government funding. The winning bids should be revealed in early 2020. In all the North-South Expressway is expected to cost nearly US$4.3 billion.

The route will run between Ashulia on the north-eastern side of the Bangladesh capital and Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. The construction project is intended to boost trade and transport and is expected to cost US$2.06 billion. The Bangladesh Government is giving its approval for the project and will provide $725.3 million of the financing required from its own budget.

    International interest is strong in Vietnam’s landmark North-South Expressway project. French, Japanese and South Korean firms are amongst those showing an interest in building sections of the 2,100km route. Vietnamese contractors are also showing interest in the project and the tender process for the latest stretches will remain open until 9th July.
