The authorities in Russia and the Ukraine are making plans for a new transport link via the Kerch Strait. At this early stage of the planning process, both bridge and tunnel options are being considered. This new bridge or tunnel connection would allow drivers to travel between Crimea and Kuban (South) and improve transport connections and trade, reinforcing the strong economic links that exist between Russia and the Ukraine. The authorities are now setting out feasibility studies, the results of which will decide whether to opt for a bridge or tunnel and also providing suggestions as to the design and construction methods that will be most suitable. The Kerch Strait connection was first raised as a concept in 2010. At present this link is expected to cost in the region of US$1.4 billion to construct, although more accurate estimates will be provided by the feasibility studies.
