New New Zealand tunnel for North Island

The tender process is ending for the tunnel project to construct a new tunnel in New Zealand. The route of the new tunnel runs through the Manawatu Gorge in Tararua District. When the tunnel is complete it will provide and improved link between the east and west at the southern end of New Zealand’s North Island.

    The provincial British Columbia government in western Canada has chosen a Design-Build-Finance-Operate-Maintain (DBFOM) procurement model for the Vancouver region’s 10-lane bridge replacement for the ageing Massey Tunnel.     New Zealand transport minister Simeon Brown is considering tolling seven new “Roads of National Significance” if that would speed their completion.

    Media reports noted that NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) said procurement and construction of the roads could start within the next three years.

    The projects are Belfast-to-Pegasus, the Hawke’s Bay Expressway, SH1 Cambridge-to-Piarere, State Highway 29 Tauriko, Takitimu North Link Stage 2, Mill Road and Warkworth-to-Wellsford.
