New New Zealand tunnel for North Island

The tender process is ending for the tunnel project to construct a new tunnel in New Zealand. The route of the new tunnel runs through the Manawatu Gorge in Tararua District. When the tunnel is complete it will provide and improved link between the east and west at the southern end of New Zealand’s North Island.

The Waterview Connection project is on schedule to begin its main construction phase next year, and the prime minister was on hand to turn the first soil for a 30m-deep trench which is needed to allow access for the tunnels’ southern approach trench in the west Auckland suburb of Owairaka.
