New highway link for key Algerian port

Work on a new highway link is now underway in Algeria. The road will connect the port of Ghazaouet with the East-West highway, improving inter-modal transport. The new highway will boost truck movements to and from the port and help develop trade while also helping cut congestion in the town as existing links are not able to cope with the traffic volumes. Work on a new highway link is now underway in Algeria. The road will connect the port of Ghazaouet with the East-West highway, improving inter-modal transport. The new highway will boost truck movements to and from the port and help develop trade while also helping cut congestion in the town as existing links are not able to cope with the traffic volumes. The first 16km portion of the highway is being constructed by a Chinese contractor. Meanwhile construction of Algeria’s 58km coastal bypass connecting Ghazaouet with Marsat Ben M'hidi is now 40% complete.

    In Uganda planning is underway for the upgrade of the Kampala-Jinja route. Preparations are being made for a new tolled highway connecting with capital Kampala. The upgrade will see the route being widened with four lanes for much of the length, six lanes on the approach to Kampala and up to eight lanes where vehicle densities will be heaviest to carry the capital’s traffic.     An important new road link is being built in Algeria that will connect the port of Oran with the country’s East-West motorway. The new road link is expected to open to traffic in 2017. The work is being carried out by an Algerian-Turkish partnership, Engoa-Makyol. Costing US$483 million, the work will take some 30 months to complete. The new road is expected to improve traffic flow to and from the port and reduce congestion in and around Oran as heavy trucks will no longer have to use existing urban routes.

    Japanese consultants are planning to realign a Kenyan bypass, as Shem Oirere reports. Japanese consultants are resolving an engineering quagmire involving a 17.5km bypass in Kenya's Coast region. The new design realigning the bypass is underway by Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) consultants. The road is an alternative link from the hinterland to the south coast and to the proposed Dongo Kundu Port. The 23m-wide bypass would also serve to reduce traffic congestion across the Likoni Channel.
