A new road project in Costa Rica will improve traffic flow for the ring road around the capital, San Jose. The work is for a 2.25km overpass, which will be Costa Rica’s longest once complete.

The overpass connects the Northern Ring road between the intersection with Route 32 and Colima de Tibas, to the north of San Jose. Construction of the overpass forms part of the Northern Ring Road’s third phase. Also included in the third phase of the project will be the construction of a bridge at Tibas.

In all some US$163 million is being spent on the Norther Ring Road project, with the work split into five phases. Costa Rica’s Ministry of Public Works and Transports (MOPT) has revealed that the project is around 60% complete at this stage.

The work will help improve Costa Rica's tourist trade on which the country's economy relies heavily. Route 32 connects San Jose with Limon on the coast, a key destination for tourists. The new ring road will boost traffic flow and minimise delays for drivers.
