Vietnam is working on plans for important new bridge projects for its two biggest cities, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

In Hanoi, plans are being drawn up for the new Duong Bridge. This will improve transport between Hanoi and Bach Ninh. The new bridge will be located around 100m from the existing bridge. Its construction is intended to alleviate traffic delays.

The work will cost an estimated US$109 million. Construction is due to commence in 2021 and will take until 2025 to complete. The financing has yet to be sourced but the project will be carried out under the PPP model.

The clearance height for the new bridge will have to be determined and will be an important factor in the design as the Duong River carries waterborne traffic. There are also discussions over raising the height of the existing road bridge and also construction a new rail link over the river as separate projects.

And in Ho Chi Minh City, construction for the new Can Gio Bridge project will commence in the third quarter of 2021. The 3.4km bridge will provide an improved connection between Can Gio and Nha Be on the southern outskirts of Ho Chi Minh City.

The bridge is expected to cost $227 million to build. The link will feature a cable-stayed design, with two traffic lanes in either direction. Construction is due for completion in late 2025 or early 2026. When the link opens it will replace the existing Binh Khanh ferry.
