New bridge planned for Kenya’s key port of Mombasa

A new bridge in Kenya’s premier port of Mombasa is being planned. This will be the second Nyali Bridge and it is being built in a bid to cut congestion as the existing structure is unable to cope with the current traffic volumes. The new bridge will be 600m long and the project will also include building 400m of connecting roads to link the structure to the existing network. A new bridge in Kenya’s premier port of Mombasa is being planned. This will be the second Nyali Bridge and it is being built in a bid to cut congestion as the existing structure is unable to cope with the current traffic volumes. The new bridge will be 600m long and the project will also include building 400m of connecting roads to link the structure to the existing network. The 6679 Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) is due to open the tender process shortly. The winner of the tender will have the job of designing, financing, operating and maintaining the bridge under the PPP model.

    In Uganda planning is underway for the upgrade of the Kampala-Jinja route. Preparations are being made for a new tolled highway connecting with capital Kampala. The upgrade will see the route being widened with four lanes for much of the length, six lanes on the approach to Kampala and up to eight lanes where vehicle densities will be heaviest to carry the capital’s traffic.     Planning is being carried out for the new Mombasa Gate Bridge project, which is expected to cost close to US$778 million. The bridge will connect Mombasa Island with the South Coast, replacing a ferry operation, which first began operation in 1937. The feasibility study for the 1.4km bridge is now complete and construction of the link is expected to take 36 months to complete.
