Unlike the existing bascule bridge however, the new structure will provide a higher clearance so that some vessels will be able to pass underneath without having to raise the bridge, reducing traffic disruption on the road link. When complete, the Lake Lothing Third Crossing will connect Waveney Drive on the south side, to Denmark Road and Peto Way on the north side of Lake Lothing. Construction is intended to commence in 2020, with completion hoped for 2022.
