A large number of road projects are planned as part of the US$16 billion (SAR 60 billion) Makkah Gate residential project in the city of Makkah, Saudi Arabia.

Makkah Gate Company (MGC) has revealed that the huge project will cover an area of 90mn m² about 14km west of Makkah’s Grand Mosque. According to MCC, a non-profit company, it will comprise 45 model districts that include road projects, shopping malls, university, an amusement park, cultural facilities, a complex for government offices, museums and heritage centres, public utilities, a 500,000m² housing complex for employees along with educational and health institutions. In addition, more than half of the project will be within the holy precincts of Makkah, while the remaining 46% will be in the Al Hal area.

The Makkah Gate residential project is expected to take 15 to 20 years to complete, and will accommodate 800,000 people, mostly the residents of Makkah who had to leave their homes for the Grand Mosque expansion. MGC is owned by Al Balad Al Ameen Development and Urban Regeneration Company, the investment arm of Makkah Municipality.
