Morocco planning series of key road upgrades

Morocco is planning to upgrade and widen several of its major road links during 2016. The aim of the works will be to boost capacity as well as to improve stretches of road that suffer from regular flooding or which have an unacceptably high rate of crashes. In all around 825km of roads will be improved by the programme of works, while there are also plans to improve 16 bridges.

Morocco is planning to upgrade and widen several of its major road links during 2016. The aim of the works will be to boost capacity as well as to improve stretches of road that suffer from regular flooding or which have an unacceptably high rate of crashes. In all around 825km of roads will be improved by the programme of works, while there are also plans to improve 16 bridges. One section of road due to be upgraded is the 13km Larache-Ksar El Kbir stretch of the N1 route, while another is the 12km Sidi Bouzid-Jorf Lasfar expressway. Also being improved is the Casablanca-Berrechid stretch of highway, which will help to cut the current chronic congestion at peak periods. The widening work will reduce delays by providing an increase in capacity between central Casablanca and its international airport located just to the south of the city. Meanwhile work on the El Jadida-Safi coastal highway will be completed.

    In Uganda planning is underway for the upgrade of the Kampala-Jinja route. Preparations are being made for a new tolled highway connecting with capital Kampala. The upgrade will see the route being widened with four lanes for much of the length, six lanes on the approach to Kampala and up to eight lanes where vehicle densities will be heaviest to carry the capital’s traffic. The construction work is expected to cost some US$74 million and the new link will connect with the existing Kampala-Entebbe highway.

The Indonesian Government plans to build 559km of new roads as part of a new transport infrastructure programme. Indonesia’s capital Jakarta faces a growing problem due to severe traffic congestion, which is particularly intense at peak periods.     Work is now underway in Namibia to upgrade key road links. One project will see improvement works to the B2 coastal road connecting Swakopmund with Walvis Bay. Another project is for the widening and resurfacing of the C28 link, which runs from Swakopmund to Namibia’s capital Windhoek and will be reclassified as Main Road 44 once the improvements are complete. In all the work is expected to cost over US$137 million, with a total of 100km of road due to be improved and upgraded over a three year period.
