Plans are being drawn up in Mexico for the new road links to connect with Santa Lucia Airport. Building the connecting roads to Santa Lucia Airport, the new facility for Mexico City, will cost in the region of US$670.5 million according to estimates.

The project is being planned by Mexico's Secretariat for Communications and Transport (SCT). Both tolled and non-tolled links to the airport will be built and the plans should be revealed before the end of 2020.

The project to build the airport has attracted controversy. The site is a military airbase but there have been concerns over the need for its upgrade to an international airport. A project to build the new NAICM airport facility for Mexico City at another site was halted due to its enormous cost. But the Santa Lucia facility is further away from the city and there has been criticism that it will not meet the future transport requirements of Mexico City, which is one of the world’s largest cities. Although accurate figures for Mexico City’s population are not available due to the number of people living in unofficial areas, it is assumed to have over 21 million inhabitants, making it the world’s second largest city (after Tokyo with its extended surrounding areas).
