Mexican motorway under construction

Construction work is underway for Mexico’s Atizapan-Atlacomulco motorway project. The project will now be complete in 2021, although it was originally planned to be ready for traffic in 2016. A series of delays hit the contractor originally working on the project, which then resulted in Mexico’s Secretariat of Communications and Transport (SCT) awarding the contract to another group. The concession for the project is now being handled by Aleatica.

The work is costing close to US$447 million and completion of the project will help reduce congestion along the existing route while boosting safety and cutting travel times. Key road links to be improved include the 300km Zacatecas-Norponiente road, the 430km road connecting Zacatecas with Sur, the 410km road from Jalisco to Centro and the 450km road concession between Jalisco and Oriente. The tender process is being handled by Mexico's Transport and Communications body, SCT.

    Almost one year after work started on Mexico’s Atizapan-Atlacomulco highway, little progress appears to have been made. OHL Mexico, a subsidiary of the Spanish construction firm OHL group -- Obrascon Huarte Lain -- said that the apparent lack of progress is due to the government not having arranged access to the road.
