The Indonesian Government has handed out contracts for the new Sunda Strait Bridge. Construction of the US$11 billion project is expected to commence in the first quarter of 2014. The preliminary work now starting includes a feasibility study and the first stages of the design process, with specialist consultants having been contracted for this work. The bridge will measure some 29km long and will connect Lampung in Sumatra and Merak in Java, crossing the Sunda Strait as its name suggests. The structure will feature six traffic lanes for cars, buses and trucks as well as twin rail tracks and additional lanes for motorcycles.

    Plans are in hand in Indonesia for the Sunda Strait Bridge project. The Indonesian Government intends construction work to commence in 2014. The project will be funded by private investors which will also be given concessions to develop Lampung and Banten. Foreign investment will be required, no matter which firm wins the project.     A new budget projection has been set for Russia’s landmark Kerch Strait Bridge project. A close analysis of the various cost factors has now set the project’s pricetag at US$3.57 billion. Originally the project was expected to cost in the region of $1.5-3 billion but the challenging conditions and the tough winter climate have led to increased costs.
