Malaysia’s road fatality rate increasing

Research carried out by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety (Miros) reveals cause for concern with an expected increase in the annual fatality rate. The number of road crash deaths in the country currently stands at an average of 18 people/day. But that rate is expected to increase to an average of 29/day according to the research. Research carried out by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety (Miros) reveals cause for concern with an expected increase in the annual fatality rate. The number of road crash deaths in the country currently stands at an average of 18 people/day. But that rate is expected to increase to an average of 29/day according to the research. In 2020, the annual death toll on the country’s road network is expected to hit 10,716 compared with the 6,915 deaths/year recorded in recent years. Of the total number of fatalities, motorcyclists will comprise some 4,149 deaths or 60%. Malaysia ranked 20th for road fatalities according to the World Health Ranking announced in 2011.

  • US road safety concern at higher crashes

    Concern has been expressed at the increase in road deaths in the US. There were 37,461 road deaths on US roads in 2016, an increase of 5.6% from 2015. The data comes from the US Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The NHTSA data was collected from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. It also shows that the vehicle distance travelled on US roads in 2016 increased by 2.2%.

    The official data from Dutch statistics bureau, CBS, reveals a continued improvement in road safety in the country. The data available for 2013 shows a 12% drop in road deaths compared with the figures published for 2012. There were 570 road deaths in the Netherlands in 2013. The number of car occupants killed fell from 232 in 2012 to 193 in 2013, while the number of motorcyclists killed dropped from 56 in 2012 to 29 in 2013.
