A budget of US$1.86 million has been set to pay for a feasibility study into the project. The 31km Trans-Andean tunnel would run from Morococha in Junin to San Mateo in Lima and would be at an altitude of 2,000m. The tunnel would carry both vehicles and trains.

With the construction of the tunnel, journey times between Lima and Huancayo would be cut to four hours.
