Major infrastructure plans for Gulf Region

Huge investment is being seen in the Gulf Region, with some US$109 billion being spent on infrastructure development according to figures from Ventures Middle East. Huge investment is being seen in the Gulf Region, with some US$109 billion being spent on infrastructure development according to figures from Ventures Middle East. The Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) nations are spending on improving roads and highways. Saudi Arabia is carrying out work to build roads and bridges (as well as rail) infrastructure worth $77 billion. Meanwhile the UAE is spending $58 billion on transport infrastructure and Qatar is investing $35 billion. In addition, Oman is spending close to $15 billion, Kuwait is investing $13 billion and Bahrain has a budget of $2.5 billion. According to Venture Middle East, the budgets of Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar account for over $75 billion of the region's current road and bridge projects.

    Road safety in the Middle East continues to decline, according to the latest data available. There were 945,000 road crashes in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in 2012, a rise from the 853,700 in 2011 according to a recent study.
