A major highway widening and upgrade project is being carried out in the Netherlands in a bid to improve traffic flow on some of Europe’s busiest routes. SAAone is carrying out the work for the A1-A6 motorway project for Rijkswaterstaat, the Dutch Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management. A key component of the project is adding new lanes to the A1 and A6 highways.

The 23km A1-A6 project is part of the general extension of the Schiphol-Amsterdam-Almere (SAA) corridor, which is known as a traffic bottleneck. Other upgrades included in the overall project encompass changes to Europe’s widest aquaduct under the river Vecht, a new connection from highway A9 to A1 with a bridge over the Amsterdam-Rhine canal, and improvements to several major traffic intersections.

Rijkswaterstaat wants to achieve greater accessibility for this economically important region through improved traffic flow and shorter, more reliable travel times. Completion expected in 2020.

SAAone consists of contractors VolkerWessels and 981 Hochtief, dredging and marine contracting company 1355 Boskalis and investor DIF. Rijkswaterstaat issued a 30-year design, build, finance and maintain contract to SAAone.
