Key road link in South West Germany

A new road link has been constructed that connects the German municipalities of Weil am Rhein and Lörrach. The road has taken seven years to construct and includes a 347m long tunnel. Located in the South West of Germany, the road actually passes through Switzerland and has cost around €100 million to construct.

Icomos, which advises the United Nations on protection of world heritage sites, has written to Highways England urging a rethink of the planned tunnel that would be just under 3kmk long. It argues that the tunnel and the dualling of the A303 carriageways either side would damage the landscape and destroy archaeological evidence
