Kenya-Tanzania road link construction to commence

Construction work is due to commence shortly on a new road link connecting Kenya and Tanzania. The 450km route will connect the cities of Bagamoyo in Tanzania with Kenya’s key port, Mombasa. The project is expected to cost US$600 million and will also run through Saadani, Pangani, Lunga Lunga and Malindi. The route runs along existing roads and the work will require repairs and upgrading to a 250km stretch, as well as asphalt surfacing of a section measuring 175km.

The new design realigning the bypass is underway by Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) consultants. The road is an alternative link from the hinterland to the south coast and to the proposed Dongo Kundu Port. The 23m-wide bypass would also serve to reduce traffic congestion across the Likoni Channel.

  • Improved road links between Kenya and Tanzania

    Work on the Taveta-Voi road link connecting Kenya and Tanzania is now being planned. The African Development Bank is providing a loan worth US$113 million. The work includes widening and improving a 42km bypass at Arusha and upgrades to a 115km section of road between Holili and Arusha. This package of works is due for completion by 2018.
