Contractors Donati and BESIX will handle a road widening project in Umbria, Italy for ANAS, the firm managing the Italian road network
A contract to widen and improve State Road 318 in Italy has been awarded to the Valfabbrica 2020 joint venture. The contract was awarded by ANAS, the company managing the Italian road network. Comprising Donati and BESIX, the joint venture partners will handle the Valfabbrica contract, which is worth over €80 million.

The package of work involves doubling State Road 318 over a distance of 3.1km in the municipality of Valfabbrica, in the province of Perugia (Umbria). The job is made more complex as it includes the 874m Picchiarella Tunnel and the 1,545m Casa Castalda Tunnel stretch, as well as the Tre Vescovi viaduct and the Calvario bridge.

The aim of the project is to improve the road connection and traffic flow between the cities of Perugia and Ancona. The existing road connecting the two cities will remain in service for the duration of the work. The construction work is being handled in seven successive phases and will take 42 months to complete.

The project is the subject of a thorough environmental plan, which will be supervised throughout the duration of the work. The plan includes limiting noise and dust, and reducing earth movements and truck traffic.

The entire infrastructure will be supplied to the client, ANAS, in the form of a BIM model, facilitating its long-term operation and maintenance.

The upgrade to the UK’s busy A14 route will address a significant traffic bottleneck - Mike Woof writes The UK is suffering badly from traffic congestion, a problem that is particularly severe in and around its major cities. Lack of investment in road construction over many years has resulted in a major backlog of work, while the country has seen growing vehicle numbers. To make matters worse, there have been few additions to the major road network since the late 1980s and early 1990s. And the combinatio
