Indonesia toll road projects face construction delays

The collapse of an elevated toll road section in Indonesia has triggered delays to ongoing projects for new links. A stretch of the Bekasi-Cawang-Kampung Melayu (Becakayu) toll road section in East Jakarta collapsed. As a result, work on a series of elevated highway projects has been halted. The collapse of an elevated toll road section in Indonesia has triggered delays to ongoing projects for new links. A stretch of the Bekasi-Cawang-Kampung Melayu (Becakayu) toll road section in East Jakarta collapsed. As a result, work on a series of elevated highway projects has been halted.


The projects are the Cimanggis-Cibitung toll road, Ciawi-Sukabumi toll road, Cibitung-Cilincing toll road, Jakarta toll road, Kayu Agung-Palembang-Betung toll road, Krian-Legundi-Bunder-Manyar toll road, Pasuruan-Probolinggo toll road, Serpong-Cinere toll road, Surakarta-Ngawi toll road and Terbangi Besar-Kayu Agung-Pematang Panggang toll road.

In addition new safety measures are being implemented for the Becakayu toll road, Depok-Antasar project and the Jakarta-Cikampek toll road.

Meanwhile funding from China is being sought for a new bridge to connect Batam and Bintan in Riau islands. Building the 7km-long bridge is expected to cost US$190.5 million.

    Building work for the toll road connecting Cileunyi with Sumedang and Dawuan in Indonesia will now be complete ahead of schedule. The route will open to traffic in 2020, instead of 2021 as originally planned. The work is being carried out in six separate sections. The contractor Citra Karya Jabar Tol is currently building sections 4, 5 and 6, having completed section 3, with the work costing close to US$555 million. Work is also well underway on sections 1 and 2 for the project.

    Financing is being sought in Indonesia for a series of major infrastructure projects. In all the work is expected to require US$9.59 billion and is for six highway projects, with one in Kalimantan and five in Java. The project in Kalimantan is for the Bontang-Samarinda Highway. In Java the highway projects are for links from Cileunyi-Tasikmalaya-Cilacap stretching 183km, Bawen-Yogyakarta, Kamal-Balaraja-Teluknaga stretching 48.3km, Semanan-Balaraja stretching 31.7km and Semarang-Demak.

A further 400km of new toll roads will be completed during 2019, bringing Indonesia’s total toll road length to 2,000km in all. Key toll road sections due for completion include stretches of the Jakarta Outer Ring Round 2 and the Balikpapan-Samaridan toll road.
