Although India’s highway development programme has been seen as a high priority for the country’s economic development, rural roads have been so far regarded as less important.                 Although India’s highway development programme has been seen as a high priority for the country’s economic development, rural roads have been so far regarded as less important. However a new programme of rural road development is being set up in a bid to redress the balanace. Some US$15.4 billion is being allotted from central and state government sources to pay for road construction, maintenance and upgrade work for rural; connections. Called the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) programme, this plan will run until 2020.
