The go ahead has been given for a key road widening project close to Gateshead in the UK. Located just to the south of the city of Newcastle, the work will be for the upgrading of a section of the busy A1 Great North Road where it passes Gateshead. The work is of vital importance as the A1 provides a key route for the UK, connecting Scotland and England.

The €275 million (£250 million) project will see a 4km stretch of the A1 being widened between junctions 65 and 67. Included in the work will be the replacement of the current bridge spanning the main East Coast rail link. The contractors Costain and Jacob are working on the project, which is required as the section of A1 has been a focal point for congestion and long traffic delays at peak periods in recent years.
