This package of works was awarded by the Finnish Transport Agency to Pöyry and Ramboll. The stretch of highway being upgraded lies between Taavetti and Lappeenranta. The work is for a 28km section of road including a portion of Highway No 6 and 12km of new roads. Also included will be three new interchanges, an upgrade to an existing interchange and environmental protection including the installation of new drainage and noise barriers, as well as better safety with a new central barrier to prevent crossover crashes. The upgrade to the Taavetti-Lappeenranta section of the No 6 Highway will boost capacity with the addition of two lanes. The whole project is expected to cost some €76 million. Design work is now being carried out with the Finnish Transport Agency expecting to select the winning tender in March 2015, construction scheduled to commence in the third quarter of 2015 and completion aimed for 2018. The project will be carried out by a partnership alliance between the client, engineering firms and main contractor.
