Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, is developing its road network with a series of projects underway. In the last six months the city authorities have pushed ahead with works to 385km of roads. Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, is developing its road network with a series of projects underway. In the last six months the city authorities have pushed ahead with works to 385km of roads. Around US$231 million has been budgeted for road development work, including building new links and maintaining existing roads.


At present Addis Ababa’s road network extends for a total of 5,915km, compared with 5,365km in 2014. Meanwhile 2,616km of the city’s roads are surfaced with asphalt, around 44% of the total network.

Much of the road expansion and maintenance programme has been devised by the Addis Ababa City Roads Authority (AACRA). However AACRA has the direct responsibility for just 16% of the city’s total road network. Developing the city’s road network has been placed as a high priority by the city authorities. For 2018, the city authorities have allotted 15.5% of the total budget to road development work.

    The Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA) has contracted out two major road projects to Spanish and Chinese companies. China Hunan Hunda Road & Bridge Construction will build the 111.3km Merkote-Delbo junction-Alaba-Sodo road under a contract worth around US$50 million (€39.12 million). Completion is within two and a half years. Spanish joint venture UTE Elsameks Eco Asphalt Ethiopia 35 will handle the 63km Ambo-Welliso project.   • Ethiopian authorities plan new road construction

    A series of new road projects are planned in Ethiopia. One key link will be for capital Addis Ababa. The city authorities are planning work on the road connecting the Inter-city bus terminal with the Lideta Church as well as on the road between St George Church and 18 Mazoria. The work will commence in October 2013 and will take a year to complete. The Road Fund and city authorities will require a budget of some US$397 million to build up to 113km of roads with asphalt surfaces in the 2013/2014 period.
