Ethiopia developing road projects

Ethiopia is planning a series of road projects as part of its Growth & Transformation Plan. These road projects are worth close to US$128 million in total, with the plans being managed by the Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA). Four construction companies have been awarded the contracts by the ERA. Ethiopia is planning a series of road projects as part of its Growth & Transformation Plan. These road projects are worth close to US$128 million in total, with the plans being managed by the Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA). Four construction companies have been awarded the contracts by the ERA. The Chinese contractor CGC Overseas Construction Group will rebuild the 60km Shambu-Backo link in a deal worth $45.7 million, providing the existing gravel road with a new asphalt surface. Local contractor Yemene Girmay will handle the $21 million project to rebuild the 38.5km road connecting Worhabe with Bojober. Another local contractor, Powercon Construction, will handle the $42.6 million work to rebuild the 43.2km road linking Dabat with Agire. And local contractor Melkon will rebuild a 7.4km road in Dire Dawa.

    The World Bank is offering funding worth some US$320 million for construction of the 258km Nekempte-Bure road in Ethiopia. In total the project is expected to cost $385 million to build, with the Ethiopian Government providing the remaining $65 million.     Key highway developments are improving connectivity for Ethiopia. The African Development Bank (AfDB) will finance part of the Mojo-Hawassa express highway project. The 209km highway will be constructed in two phases over a five year period, with extra funding coming from South Korea Exim Bank and the government of Ethiopia.
