AECOM will head the design team for the US$700 million I-35 widening project in San Antonio, Texas. The construction work is being handled by the Lone Star Constructors consortium, which comprises Fluor and Austin Bridge & Road.

The award of the design contract follows the award of the construction works to Lone Star Constructors by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). The Interstate 35 (I-35) Northeast Expansion (NEX) South Project is required as the highway currently experiences regular traffic delays for drivers.

The work will be carried out along a 6.4km stretch of the highway. The work will see the addition of three elevated express lanes in either direction. A number of other structures will also be built. The Interstate 35 Capital Express North project is expected to take five years to carry out, improving traffic flow and cutting congestion.
