A demolition team has successfully demolished the damaged southern lane of the Skjeggestad Bridge in Norway. Located in Vestfold, the bridge was damaged some weeks ago when the ground around its foundations slipped. The explosive demolition project was technically challenging due to the proximity of the bridge carrying the northern lanes but did go to plan according to 8006 Norway’s Public Roads Administration (NPRA). Initial plans to repair the Skjeggestad Bridge proved impractical and the decision was made to remove the damaged structure instead.

The collapse of the structure has prompted questions as to the safety of other bridges in Norway and it has since transpired that checks carried out previously may have been insufficient. The slippage that spelled the fate of the Skjeggestad Bridge was related to the presence of a type clay, which can become unstable when under stress and in the presence of water.
