Austria’s Government is cutting its road construction budget for 2010 in a bid to trim costs.

This will have a major effect on the highway projects contractor 4178 Asfinag is involved in at present. The contractor may have to delay construction of the A5 and A3 projects or make them narrower.

Another cost cutting option would be to build a bridge over the Danube River as part of the bypass around the capital Vienna instead of the tunnel proposed initially. This would reduce costs by some €500 million. However, this move would be controversial due to the added environmental impact.
