A series of major highway projects are under construction in Colombia as the country develops its road network.

Construction work is being carried out on the road between Villavicencio and Yopal in Casanare Department. Social distancing and other measures have been implemented to ensure the safety of site personnel. The road is 266km in length and work has recommenced on four of the seven sections, with the project expected to cost in excess of US$956 million. The 140m Charte Bridge should be complete by the third quarter of 2020 and is expected to carry 10,000 vehicles/day once it opens to traffic.

Work is now restarting in Valle del Cauca Department on 17 construction projects. Construction is underway on the dual carriageway connecting Cali with Candelaria. This road stretch should be complete in the first quarter of 2021, along with work on the Juanchita Bridge. Strict social distancing and health measures have been put in place to ensure the safety of the construction personnel. Work will recommence on the road connecting Cali with Yumbo in due course and this will be complete in the second half of 2020, a slight delay from the original timeline for the first half of 2020, but unavoidable due to the pandemic.

An agreement over the necessary land required for road building means that eight projects will be able to progress. The road projects now benefiting include the Ruta del Sol II and III, the Transversal de las Americas as well as the road from Bogota to Villavicencio, the road between Antioquia and Bolivar, and the road connecting Bucaramanga with Barrancabermeja and Yondo.
