Construction work is now underway on a major tunnel project in China. Twin tunnels will be built underneath Donghu Lake and Nanhu Lake, improving transport for Wuhan in Hubei Province.

Building the twin tunnels is expected to take four years to complete. The bores are being driven by a TBM, which will have to cut a distance of 13.3km in total. The TBM is cutting a 15.5m diameter, which is sufficiently large to allow the tunnels to feature twin decks.

The work is being handled by Wuhan Urban Construction Investment & Development Group. When the twin tunnels are complete, they will help reduce traffic congestion in the central Wuchang District, improving journey times.
