Chile bridge project under control

The project to build the Chacao Bridge in Chile will now be managed fully by South Korean Contractor Hyundai. The firm formed a consortium, Consorcio Puente Chacao, with Brazilian contractor OAS to build the bridge. However OAS later hit financial issues, so Hyundai has now assumed full control of the project. The new bridge will connect the mainland with Chiloe Island and will be designed to cope with potentially extreme conditions. The area has suffered some of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded

The project to build the Chacao Bridge in Chile will now be managed fully by South Korean Contractor Hyundai. The firm formed a consortium, Consorcio Puente Chacao, with Brazilian contractor OAS to build the bridge. However OAS later hit financial issues, so Hyundai has now assumed full control of the project. The new bridge will connect the mainland with Chiloe Island and will be designed to cope with potentially extreme conditions. The area has suffered some of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded so the bridge will be a suspension type able to move without damage in the event of any major shocks.

    Construction work could commence on Chile’s landmark Chacao Bridge project as early as July 2017. The construction work is being carried out by a consortium called CPC. The new suspension bridge will be 2.6km long and will connect Chiloe Island with the mainland, costing some US$800 million to build. The design allows the structure to cope with massive earthquakes, due to the risk in this region of Chile.

    Progress is being made in Chile for two key mega projects, the Chacao Bridge and the El Melon Tunnel. Chile's Ministry of Public Works (MOP) has ordered the consortium working on the Chacao Bridge project to carry out additional studies. The consortium comprises Systra, OAS, Aas-Jakobsen and Hyundai and the project is worth US$511.45 million.
